Candles that smell like a walk in the forest!

A recent Woodland Trust post asked 'Why do Woodlands Smell so Good?'. From pine needles and petrichor, to the smell of rotting leaves, we're programmed to find solace in the the fragrances found in the forest.

As the Woodland Trust explain, pine trees release 'terpenes', compounds which give the forest a fresh smell. Inhaling terpenes and other natural aromas help modulate our nervous system, reducing our fight or flight response and lowering stress levels. Which is, in part, why a good walk through the woods feels so calming.

Winterfold Candle Co. was born from tramping around the forest, pockets filled with pine cones and other treasures the children found on their wanderings. Tired of sickly smelling candles, we want to create something different. We wanted to bring the forest home. So we did just that, curating seasonal scents that transport us to nature.

Here are some of our favourite candles inspired by the forest.

Wintering

A Winterfold Wintering candle sits on Katherine May's bestselling book, Wintering

Our first essential oil blend, and probably our favourite, Wintering marries cypress and petitgrain. Crushed pine needles, woody warmth and a note of lingering bitter citrus.

It is grounding and calming. Just how you feel after time in the woods.

Petrichor

The scent of the earth after rain is a fragrance humans are remarkably attuned to, the

sensitivity perhaps helped our ancestors locate water sources or fertile land. Blending earth, green and mineral notes with water, Petrichor evokes the calm, cleansing scent of the earth following rain.

A Winterfold Hedgerow candle sits on a vintage, cream chair in front of a green hedgerow.

Hedgerow

What is more quintessentially British than a walk gathering blackberries? Fingers stained with blackberry juice, snacking on more than are taken home for a crumble. Our Hedgerow candle captures this nostalgia, scented with warm notes of blackcurrant and blackberry, lifted with the freshness of bay. Try it here.

Amber jars sit on a rustic wooden table at a market, a Midwinter candle in an amber jar sits inside a glass dome.

Midwinter

This candle divides people. Some find it too smoky, but those that love it find warmth and softness in it's smoky, woody heart. Blending cedar and ashes,

Midwinter is the warmth of an open fire, the primal, autumnal joy of a bonfire.

And finally, our bestselling Christmas Tree scented candle. It never ceases to amaze people how incredible this candle smells. It is identical to the scent of a real Christmas Tree. We absolutely adore it and often burn it throughout the year, its gentle green, freshness a tonic, whatever the season. We (and our customers) can't recommend it enough. Try it here.

Which candle would you choose to transport you to the forest. Winterfold awaits!
